Bath Central School District To Get Dental Health Program

From Finger Lakes Community Health:

Finger Lakes Community Health (FLCH) has received a $25,000 grant from the RCIPA Community Health & Education Foundation, Inc. to strengthen its School-Based Dental Program.

Many families struggle to find accessible dental care, but school-based programs make it easier for children to get the services they need. In partnership with the Bath Central School District, FLCH will install dental equipment in district schools and provide dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and X-rays to any child enrolled in the Bath school system. When follow-up care is needed, students are referred to an FLCH health center or to their own dental home. This approach helps families by removing barriers and ensuring that children receive continuous, quality dental care without parents needing to miss work.

FLCH currently visits 74 schools across the Finger Lakes region, offering in-school dental care to students and improving access for families who may otherwise face transportation or scheduling challenges. To find out more and register your students, go here: http://bit.ly/4o2LPca

“Funding from the RCIPA Foundation is making it possible for us to purchase the dental equipment we need for this work,” said Mary Zelazny, CEO of Finger Lakes Community Health. “We’re deeply grateful to RCIPA for helping highlight the importance of early dental care for children.  Ensuring access to care and building healthy habits at a young age can help children thrive.”

This expansion is made possible through support from the RCIPA Foundation, a private foundation fully supported by RCIPA. The RCIPA Foundation shares the historical mission of providing funding assistance to non-profit Rochester-area organizations that serve the healthcare needs of the community, particularly underserved populations. The Foundation also supports academic and continuing medical education through endowments, scholarships, and fellowships offered in partnership with Rochester-area universities, colleges, and hospital systems.

Steuben To Do Another Operation Greenlight

Throughout the month of November, county buildings will be illuminated in green as part of this effort to show visible support for those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Operation Green Light, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, brings communities together to raise awareness about the challenges many veterans face and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist them and their families.

Gary Smith, Director of Steuben County Veteran Services said “. It is a great opportunity for the community to show their appreciation for our veterans in Steuben County by displaying a green light at their homes and businesses. This continued support of our veterans and the pride and patriotism in our communities is part of what makes what makes this such a great place to live”.

Now in its fourth year, the initiative continues to grow, with counties across the United States lighting courthouses, bridges, and landmarks in green as a unified symbol of appreciation. Steuben County is proud to join this national effort once again to recognize and support its veteran community.

Residents, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to participate by changing one light bulb in or outside their homes to a green bulb throughout November. Each green light serves as a simple yet powerful gesture to let veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Counties and residents across the country are sharing their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

Gillibrand: USA Depends Too Much On China For Meds

Democrat U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says America is too reliant on China for medicine.  Gillibrand cited a new report out that says China accounts for 95% of U.S. imports of ibuprofen, 70% of U.S. imports of acetaminophen, and up to 45% of U.S. imports of penicillin.   “In the richest country in the world, our constituents shouldn’t have to worry about the safety and availability of the drugs they need to fight devastating diseases like cancer,” said Senator Gillibrand.  “Making sure that the supply chain for generic drugs continues to be safe and reliable is essential to protect American patients, and this report is a critical first step to that end. We must increase oversight over foreign-manufactured generic drugs through improved enforcement power and a robust Food and Drug Administration (FDA) foreign inspector workforce. We must also boost domestic production of generic drugs and investments in cutting-edge biotechnology research to make sure that all Americans have access to the high-quality medications they need. Generic drugs are a critical option to keep prescription drug prices affordable, but that cannot come at the expense of quality. As ranking member of the Senate Aging Committee, I am committed to working on bipartisan solutions to secure the prescription drug supply chain, and I encourage the Trump administration and my colleagues in Congress to work together to heed the recommendations of this report so we can protect American patients.”

Some Local Races  On The Ballot In Steuben County

Election Day 2025 is coming up two weeks from tomorrow and early voting starts this coming Saturday, October 25th.  Early voting is at the Steuben County Annex Building on 20 East Morris Street in Bath, 9am to 5pm each day.  Here's what is on the ballot for Bath: Bath Town Supervisor Joshua Buck is not seeking reelection.  Running for the Bath Town Supervisor position is Thomas Thorpe III.  Running for Bath Town Clerk seat is Terra Thorpe.  There are two seats open on the Bath Town Board and three candidates.  Running for the Bath Town Board are Brian Knowles, Mike Hann and Hal Bailey.  Bailey is running as a conservative, the other Bath Town candidates are all on the Republican line.  The following candidates are running in Avoca: Dana Wightman is running again for Avoca Town Supervisor, Clerk Cindy Loucks is an incumbent running for Avoca Town Clerk.  Also, incumbents Brandy Miller and Brandace Hopkins are running for the Avoca Town Board seats.

Also On The Ballot: Statewide Prop About The Adirondacks?

There is a somewhat confusing statewide proposition on the ballot, about allowing a state forest area in the Adirondacks to have an Olympic winter sports complex there in Essex County.  It’s a yes or no vote on allowing state forest land to add 2,500 acres at Adirondack State Park.  The reason this is a statewide prop and not a local issue referendum for Essex County only, is because it’s state forest land, which is being voted on. Therefore it’s a statewide prop.

Steuben Co Americorps Is Helping Wreaths Across America

We all want our valued veterans to know how much their service to our country is appreciated! Now, more than ever, it’s important that we show our respect and gratitude for all our valued veterans, with actions, not just words. This is why AmeriCorps Seniors of Steuben County (ASSC) is proud to work in collaboration with Wreaths Across America (WAA) to honor our fallen heroes. We do this by placing a wreath on their graves each year, speaking each of their names as we do, in grateful acknowledgment of the sacrifices they made for our freedoms.

One way the ASSC Advisory Council is demonstrating support for this unique and moving event is by promoting wreath sponsorship. A small portion of the proceeds of each wreath sponsored through this Advisory Council will support the local AmeriCorps Seniors project, including the promotion of volunteerism in Steuben County. By sponsoring a wreath in this way, you not only help both programs, but you also help the Bath VA, which benefits from the volunteers which ASSC provides them.

Through WAA’s national group sponsorship program, it has helped many other nonprofits and civic groups raise funds for their own community needs. Since 2007, Wreaths Across America has given back more than $20 million to local groups.

In 2024, over three million sponsored veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 4,909 participating locations worldwide, including 2,748 wreaths in Bath National Cemetery (out of a possible 15,000+). Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira lays over 4,000 wreaths annually.

This year the goal is to place a wreath on every grave. With the generosity of local citizens, we are hoping to meet this goal and ensure no veteran is forgotten. Each hand made, fresh, live wreath costs $17 to sponsor and is made in the United States with Maine balsam.

Randy Metz, Lead Coordinator for the Wreaths Across America, Bath National Cemetery Committee, says: “We are committed to securing more sponsorships and actively engaging with our wonderful community members to spread the word about our heartfelt mission!”

National Wreaths Across America Day will be held this year on Saturday, December 13, 2025. This free event is open to all, and the organization encourages community members to participate by volunteering locally and/or sponsoring a wreath for an American hero.

For more information, or to sponsor one or more wreaths online, please visit www.wreathsacrossameric.org/NY0296P. If you prefer to use a check or money order, call 607-664-2298 to have a paper form sent to you.

Wreaths Across America’s yearlong mission is simple: Remember the fallen, Honor those that serve, and Teach the next generation about the value of freedom.

A Fire Safety Tip, From The Bath Volunteer Fire Dept

Did you know that one of the leading causes of home fires starts in the laundry room? Most dryer fires begin when lint builds up in the vent or exhaust system. The good news — they’re completely preventable!

Here are a few simple steps to keep your home safe:

???? Clean the lint trap before and after each load of laundry.

???? Check the vent pipe regularly to make sure it isn’t blocked or restricted.

???? Never run your dryer when you’re sleeping or away from home.

???? Have your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year.

???? Watch for warning signs: longer drying times, clothes that feel unusually hot, or a burning smell.

Taking a few minutes to maintain your dryer can prevent a dangerous fire — and protect your family and home.

O'Mara, Palmesano Name Part Of Rt 14 After Sgt. Hayes

State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C-Corning) today joined other area officials and family members, friends, and fellow veterans to honor the memory of United States Army Sergeant James S. Hayes of Penn Yan through the official designation of a section of State Route 14 in Yates County as the “Sergeant James S. Hayes Memorial Highway.”

O’Mara and Palmesano introduced and sponsored this year’s legislation (S.1899A/A.6661, Chapter 350 of the Laws of 2025) authorizing the designation. Under the measure, which was signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul in late August, the portion of State Route 14 “beginning at its intersection with Plum Point Road in the town of Milo, County of Yates, continuing in a northerly direction, and terminating at its intersection with State Route 54, also known as Main Street, in the village of Dresden,County of Yates, shall be dedicated to Sergeant James S. Hayes.”

O’Mara and Palmesano said they sponsored the legislation at the request of the Hayes family and Yates County Veterans Service Agency Director Douglas Gibbs to honor Hayes’ memory and pay tribute to his life and service.

Hayes was born in Geneva, New York in 1983 and later moved to Penn Yan where he graduated from Penn Yan Academy High School in 2001. Upon his graduation from high school and in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks on America, he enlisted in the United States Army on January 13, 2002 and served three tours overseas – a combat tour in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and two combat tours in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom).

Hayes was a highly decorated combat veteran. For his service, he was  awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.

He was honorably discharged from the Army at the rank of Sergeant on June 3, 2005 and returned home to Penn Yan where he and his high school sweetheart and wife, Amanda, had two children, Damion and Rebecca.

After leaving the Army, Hayes fought a lengthy battle with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He lost that battle on August 23, 2020, in an automobile crash when his vehicle went off the road along the portion of the highway being dedicated in his memory. He was 37 years old.

Family, friends, and fellow veterans remember Hayes as a devoted and loving husband and father, a loyal and true friend, and a brave and proud soldier and patriot who loved his country. In 2019, he was the honoree at the 8th Annual Warrior Benefit Concert, an annual fundraiser held at the American Legion Greece Post 468 in Rochester to support local veterans and active-duty military.

Hayes is also remembered as the proud inventor of the “Barrett Ball,” described as a “virtually indestructible dog toy” named after his faithful companion, friend, and service dog, Barrett.

This morning’s designation ceremony was held at Bravery Winery in Dresden, whose founder and owner Corey Christman, a veteran of the United States Air Force, is recognized as a staunch supporter of veteran, military spouse, and first responder focused non-profit organizations.

O’Mara, Palmesano, and Gibbs joined Hayes’ wife, Amanda, their children Damian and Rebecca, his mother, Rose, brother, Robert, and other family members and friends, fellow veterans, and area officials at today’s tribute, which included the unveiling of the state Department of Transportation signage ceremony designating the “Sergeant James S. Hayes Memorial Highway.”

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said, "Sergeant Hayes was a hero and a patriot who served our nation with enormous courage and pride. Like so many of America’s veterans, he returned home and faced a long and hard- fought emotional battle in the aftermath of combat service to our nation. It was a struggle that he fought with all his heart, strength, and soul to the end. To his enduring credit, he never lost sight of the overriding importance of family, community, and country. It is our hope that this designation will stand as a lasting tribute and testament to the life and service of Sergeant James Hayes. We hope that it will help to express the collective respect of our local community, our entire region, the State of New York, and our nation. We envision the ‘Sergeant James S. Hayes Memorial Highway’ as an enduring honor.”

Sheriff Jim Allard's Monthly Newsletter, For September

It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County. Another Wineglass Marathon has successfully been run, with Lieutenant Kennedy and Sergeant Hawk completing the full marathon and Investigator Hurd completing the half. It was an absolutely gorgeous day for the marathon, and we broke our own record for the most runners at the full marathon this year! A huge thank you to all the Fire Departments, volunteers and police that make this great event happen. Also, last weekend, the Cohocton Fall Foliage Festival occurred and was a great success, again due to fantastic weather, dedicated volunteers, fire and police! We are so fortunate to live in a county in which we can celebrate these incredible annual events.

September continued to be busy for our agency. Our county had another alleged attempted murder, an arrest of an alleged bank robber and a successful search and rescue of a three-year-old who had wandered off after his puppy. We participated in the Erwin Tri-County First Responder Park 9/11 Ceremony and joined in recognizing Campbell Volunteer Fire Chief and EMT instructor, Glenn Vogel, for his decades of service. Glenn is a truly deserving honoree.

In September, Sergeant Angelo Sciotti, Officer Jacob Eighmey, Deputy Brian Harrison and Deputy Alan Warriner taught ALERRT at the SUNY Alfred Police Academy. Major David Sutton and Captain Justin Mills attended the New York State Sheriff’s Association Jail Administrators Conference, and Captain Justin Mills and Lieutenant Carlton Wetherby attended the FBI Great Lakes Leadership Seminar. Officer Brian Burdell completed the NYS DCJS Jail Time Credit Course. Sergeant Sorge and Deputy Butler taught another NYS Boater’s Safety Course, continuing our monthly presentation of this course. Sergeant Sorge hosted two Child Passenger Safety Seat events. Deputy Dininny and Deputy Butler instructed in the NYS Marine Law Enforcement and Vessel Operator Course. Lieutenant Kennedy and Lieutenant Logsdon attended the NYS Sheriff’s Association Law Enforcement Supervisor Course. Deputy Henry completed the Interview and Interrogation Course; Investigator Shepherd completed a course in investigating crimes against animals and Sergeant Wood and Investigator Day completed the NYS Excelsior Challenge. Sheriff Allard completed the FBINAA Comprehensive Officer Resiliency Train the Trainer course and appeared on the monthly “Frankly Speaking” interview.

September was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with an attempted murder investigation, an unauthorized use of a vehicle/vehicular pursuit investigation, five assault investigations, two trespass investigations, one possession of a weapon investigation, two animal cruelty investigations, two obstructing governmental administration investigations, two endangering a child investigations, one menacing investigation, a criminal use of a firearm investigation, four sexual assault investigations, fifteen larceny investigations, eight grand larceny investigations, two drug investigations, three welfare fraud investigations, seven death investigations, three falsifying business records investigations, three filing a false instrument investigations, five misuse of food stamps investigations, five criminal contempt investigations, one counterfeiting investigation, one missing child investigation, one forgery investigation, two identity theft investigations, four harassment investigations and two criminal mischief investigations. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments, emergency medical aid, assisting other agencies, serving of warrants, and three intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.

All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion, and we received multiple commendations from the public regarding their outstanding performance.

We continue to pray for our first responder colleagues and deployed military across the globe, as well as their families. We also pray for the victims of mass casualty events and state sponsored aggression.

Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard

Two Scams Have Been Happening In Steuben County

State Police say there’s a scam out there, at ATM machines.  The way the scam works is, the con artist tells a person at an ATM machine that they are unable to get their money, and asks the person at the ATM, to do a withdrawl – after that, the scam artist takes   the money from the victim.

Also, Sheriff Jim Allard says there’s a scam been going on in the Corning area, where scam artists pretend to be texting from a local bank saying that you need to click on a link and change your account information.  Allard says this is a scam – and says to never give out that  kind of info when texting or from a phone call.  Call the bank, the sheriff says, to verify anything like that.
