There Was A Standoff In The Town Of Cameron

From Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard:

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on October 21, 2024, at about 12:40am, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address on Angel Road in the Town of Cameron, New York, to check the welfare of the resident based upon the reported concerns of family members. Upon arrival deputies were met by the resident, identified as fifty-year-old Allen V. Hoad, II, who was outside of the residence. Mr. Hoad began yelling at the responding deputies and then shot at and struck two patrol vehicles with a shotgun, causing damage to both vehicles. Neither deputy was injured. All units then retreated to a perimeter location. Crisis Negotiators and the Steuben County SWAT team responded and began crisis negotiations to attempt to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion while maintaining a safe perimeter around the residence.

Negotiators attempted to convince Mr. Hoad to leave the residence unarmed and turn himself in for approximately 12 hours. During the negotiations Mr. Hoad made numerous terroristic threats, threats to carry out mass casualty incidents and specific threats to leave the residence armed with firearms with the express intention to kill people. At about 2pm Mr. Hoad was observed loading his vehicle with a firearm and began driving from the residence. He then proceeded south on Angel Road and left the roadway driving into a field, avoiding a police barricade. He left the field and entered Lower Swale Road as deputies attempted to stop the vehicle. Mr. Hoad stopped his vehicle in a driveway at a residence on Lower Swale Road and attempted to enter an occupied residence. As deputies continued to give verbal commands for Mr. Hoad to stop and submit to arrest, he re-entered his vehicle which contained multiple weapons and drove it directly at deputies in the roadway, colliding with a patrol vehicle. Deputies and Officers discharged their weapons to stop Mr. Hoad from causing serious injury to responding deputies and the public. Mr. Hoad exited the vehicle and began physically fighting with the responding deputies and was subsequently taken into custody. Medical treatment was initiated immediately. Steuben County Sheriff’s Paramedic and Steuben County ALS were staged on scene and began immediate treatment prior to transportation by ambulance.

Mr. Hoad was transported to a local hospital for continued medical treatment. He was later pronounced as deceased.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hoad family” said Sheriff Allard, “We also pray for the families of the Officers and Deputies who were involved in this stressful critical incident, and work to insure wellness for them. A huge thank you to all the community and family members who worked with us to attempt to bring this to a peaceful conclusion”.

Corning Police Chief Kenzie Spaulding said “We are saddened that this incident occurred, but are always here to help ensure public safety with our law enforcement partners throughout Steuben County”

Sheriff Allard thanks the City of Corning Police Department, the Canisteo Police Department and the New York State Police for responding to a request for mutual aid in this incident, as well as the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and the Elmira Police Department for their offers of assistance.

St James Hospital Putting A Pause On Selective Surgeries

Over in Hornell, St James Hospital says, they’re putting a pause, on what they call selective surgeries, those are surgeries for non-emergency situations.  The reason: because there is a nationwide shortage of IV Fluid.

See full statement below:

In alignment with the UR Medicine affiliates, St. James Hospital will pause some elective and semi-elective surgical procedures requiring IV sterile fluids, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 16. This pause will affect surgeries scheduled at St. James Hospital. If you are currently scheduled for surgery or a procedure, you will be notified if your appointment has changed.

Since Hurricane Helene, hospitals nationwide have experienced significantly reduced shipments of IV sterile fluids. The Baxter International Plant, based in Marion, N.C., was severely damaged because of flooding from the September hurricane. According to the American Hospital Association, the plant makes 60% of the nation’s supply of IV fluids and peritoneal dialysis solutions, amounting to 1.5 million bags daily.

The U.S. government has approved use of fluids from international suppliers, and UR Medicine procurement teams are working to increase supplies from multiple vendors. While shipments of IV fluids have resumed at lower rates than before, and UR Medicine faculty and staff have taken multiple
innovative steps to use fluids more efficiently.

The pause on some elective and semi-elective surgeries will help UR Medicine extend its system-wide reserves of sterile fluids, ensuring consistent patient care across all locations with urgent and emergent cases as priorities. All cases will be reviewed daily by perioperative leaders from across the system to determine urgency. We will resume full surgery schedules as soon as available resources allow.

Steuben Co Republican Chairman Joe Sempolinski Files A Complaint Against Democrat Judge Candidate

Steuben County GOP chairman Joe Sempolinski says, he filed a complaint with the state board of elections.  Sempolinski says the Democrats candidate for county judge - Michaela Rossetti Azemi did not tell the state she was running.  Sempolinski also says Azemi did not file her campaign finance disclosure form.

"Ms. Rossettie Azemi has not only failed to file a 32 Day Pre-General campaign finance disclosure report – which was due October 4th- she has failed to register her campaign with the New York State Board of Elections at all," he said.  "This is a shockingly serious violation.  How can someone claim to be qualified to be a county level judge when apparently they can’t even attempt to comply with the most basic of campaign finance laws? Campaign finance disclosures enable the public to see who is financing a campaign and what campaign money is being spent on. The Democratic Party nominee has failed to comply with the law and provide any of this information. Either she has no idea what she is doing or has something to hide. Either way she shouldn’t be a judge.”

Here is the Response From Rosetti Azemi’s campaign:

"Sempolinski expected that this would be yet another uncontested judicial race. The outgoing judge did not resign until it was too late to petition for his vacancy, so both parties were given the opportunity to recruit a candidate as their representative on the ballot.  She is not under any campaign violations, as confirmed by an auditor from the New York State Board of Elections. Mr. Sempolinski is not in charge of issuing violations and it's a shame that he would make false accusations for political gain. His statement demonstrates only one thing: this is a highly competitive race, and Michaela Rossettie Azemi is a qualified candidate who is willing to work hard to earn the votes to be elected as Steuben County and Family Court Judge."

Disaster Response Seminar Tomorrow In Corning

From The United Way Of The Southern Tier:

Representatives from human services agencies, government departments, and local municipalities will gather Friday, October 11, in Corning to review and discuss a disaster response and recovery plan.

The meeting, originally scheduled to be held prior to the August 9 flash flood that impacted western Steuben County, will focus on the area’s most recent natural disaster. More than 75 officials and non-profit organizations are registered to attend.

Participants will review the current disaster response plan, discuss what worked well, what needs to be done differently in the future, and how to best address long-term recovery efforts.

A Prescription Take Back Day Is Happening This Month

On Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the Steuben Prevention Coalition Opioid Committee will host DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at the Public Safety Building in Bath, NY. The DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs.

For more than a decade, this biannual event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or expired—that too often become a gateway to addiction. Using a drug take-back program is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to safely dispose of medications, especially prescription medications. It’s not just safe for the environment – timely disposal of unwanted medications can reduce the risk of someone accidentally taking medication or intentionally misusing it.  “This is a great way to help keep your home safe from theft and your children safe from unintended use” said Sheriff Allard.  “Opioid safety is everyone’s business”.

Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications.

Larry Schoonover Trial Update: A Mistrial Was Declared, Due To A Lack Of Jurors -The DA And The Judge, Not Happy

Here’s an update on the Larry Schoonover case.  Schoonover is the suspect in a case of a standoff with State Police, Bath Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department in August of 2023 in Bath.  Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker says that not enough jurors showed up, so a mistrial was declared, and the Larry Schoonover Trial has been postponed.  "We needed people to appear for jury selection, and they didn't," Baker tells WVIN News.  "So because they didn't, we couldn't go forward with a jury trial.  So all of the subpeonas and all of the money and costs associated with the witnesses, some of them experts online, all of this will have to be repeated again in a month.  This is happening because people would not do their civic duty.  We needed people to do the right thing and appear, and they didn't.  It's been a disturbing trend, and the judge was very upset by it.  There is a possibility of arrests for those who  do not show up for a jury summons.  It's not something we've ever had to do in my 30 years here, in the Steuben county D.A.'s Office, but it's something the judge is taking a serious look at now, because it's becoming a very serious problem.

The judge in the Schoonover case, is Judge Chauncey Watches.

Senator O'Mara Endorses McCarthy For Judge

“I am proud to endorse Judge McCarthy for the position of Steuben County and Family Court Judge.   Judge McCarthy has been doing this job in addition to his role as Corning City Court Judge for the last ten years. Including making sure victims had access justice during the 2020 lock-down.  As an attorney I can speak to necessity of having someone qualified, experienced, and reliable in this role, the only candidate that meets those qualifications is Judge McCarthy.  Judge McCarthy has an excellent reputation and overwhelming support from attorneys and those who rely on court system running efficiently.  Being a life-long resident of Steuben County, he understands the values that make our communities strong and the difficulties facing our families.  I am confident he will continue to administer justice impartially on behalf of all the residents of Steuben County”.
