New York State Troopers Warn About Sextortion Emails

The New York State Police is warning the public of a nationwide automated sextortion scam in which scammers use people’s email address to coerce payments using intimidation and threats of embarrassment.

Scammers obtain emails and other personal information purchased illegally on the dark web to contact victims, stating that they have the victim’s personal information, and often will include a photo of the victim’s residence, and instructions to make payment in Bitcoin to avoid repercussions.

The scammers will also threaten to publicly embarrass and convince the victim that they have installed software on their phone, tablet, or computer, have access to their personal accounts and are tracking their internet use.

To get the victim to act quickly, the scammer claims they possess images of the victim viewing pornographic material and threatens to disclose this content to everyone in their contact list within 24?48 hours unless they pay in Bitcoin to have the content deleted.

Despite these claims, the scammer does not have access to the victim’s device or personal information.

If you receive one of these emails, do not engage or share any personal information such as birthdates, phone numbers, social security numbers or any financial information.

Victims should block the sender, delete the email, and report it through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) www.ic3.gov.

If someone believes that they are the victim of sextortion or identity theft, the FBI encourages them to report it by contacting their local FBI office or calling 1?800?CALL?FBI. The New York State Police (NYSP) or local law enforcement agencies can also assist with criminal investigations.

Governor Hochul: The Reasons Behind My Cell Phone Rules

In a statement where she explained her reasons for stricter cell phone rules in grade schools and high schools, Governor Kathy Hochul says, she wants kids to be kids again and to learn social skills in school  – something the governor says is happening less and less – because of constant cell phone use by the youth in school settings.

From Governor Hochul:  "First of all, many parents on their own have said they know how bad it is. They've seen their children, especially if they were able to get a cell phone at age 12, 13, 14, they turn into a different person. First of all, they lose the capacity over time to have real, genuine social interactions. They don't make eye contact. They don't talk to other students. In school, the cafeteria is silent. They're silent when they're in the schoolyard. They're silent in the halls. And the school districts that – on their own – were courageous enough to ban them said they now hear children laughing, talking, even arguing, they're communicating more.  And it was stopped. It was a dead silence. It was so unnatural. So, I had to get teachers on board, that was the easiest one. 72 percent of teachers across this country say that they are tired of the distractions and their inability to communicate with students or make connections in a way that are positive relationships."

Local Author Would Like To Speak With Vietnam Veterans

From Robert Yott:  Author/historian Robert Yott is in search of Vietnam veterans for his new project “Vietnam Veterans Share.” This project is meant to provide a forum for veterans of that war to talk about their experience during one of our country’s most turbulent times since the American Civil War. Yott has written extensively on the history and care of local war veterans. He would like to publish his findings in 2025, the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, .

“The men and women who served in Southeast Asia were often unfairly identified as agents of a deeply flawed national policy. Many returned to a nation deeply divided by an unpopular war; there were no parades or fanfare. Their voices were often stifled by the hostile reception they received.  This project is intended to give a voice to those who served honorably but were rewarded with no honor,” he said.

Yott has requested Vietnam Veterans contact him at vvs50th@yahoo.com to arrange a personal interview or request a questionnaire covering issues before, during and after the veteran’s in-country service. Or check out https://www.facebook.com/share/g/NusiRQQpm9bcHCYT/ for more details.
