UPDATE: STATEMENT FROM CHARTERS OF FREEDOM

Construction on the Charters of Freedom setting is scheduled to commence in the upcoming weeks. Following the completion of construction, a dedication ceremony and gifting will be held, where the Charters of Freedom will be presented to the Citizens of Steuben County.

To date, 58 Charters of Freedom settings have been permanently placed in communities across the country by Foundation Forward, a 501 (c)(3) educational foundation created by Vance and Mary Jo Patterson of Burke County, North Carolina.  The inspiration to set up Foundation Forward followed their first visit to the National Archives to see the founding documents.

“Seeing something our founding fathers actually penned, and then seeing their signatures – Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Rutledge, Wilson, and the others, I just got goosebumps.  And, then when we moved over and saw those first three words of The Constitution, ‘We The People’, I actually got a lump in my throat.  It was really an emotional experience,” Vance Patterson, Founder of Foundation Forward, said.

The Pattersons now work to bring that emotional experience to communities across the country.  Foundation Forward’s mission is to install Charters of Freedom settings in easily accessible locations so communities can view these founding documents in a proper area without having to travel to Washington, D.C.  These settings will provide hands-on education in American History and Civics.

“Imagine, if you will, school teachers bringing their 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes to their Charters of Freedom for annual field trips to learn a little about our founding fathers, the history surrounding the beginning of our country, and how government is meant to serve and protect ‘We The People,’” says Vance in his dedication speech.  This local access will also provide a place for Steuben County citizens to gather, celebrate, honor and reflect.

Legacy Pavers and Donors’ Plates will be installed along with the Charters of Freedom setting for citizens to honor loved ones, active duty military or veterans, first responders, family members, or organizations.  These can be purchased through tax-deductible donations to Foundation Forward starting at $100 when you visit www.Chartersoffreedom.com or by contacting their office at 828-522-1400.

Community support for this project, in the form of donation, purchase of a Legacy Paver, or scheduling a speaking engagement with your school or civic group can be coordinated through Mike Unruh at 910-508-3165, or by visiting Foundation Forward’s website www.Chartersoffreedom.com.

“Thank you to WGI for, once again, offering this wonderful gesture and opportunity to our veterans. Your generous, continued and unwavering support for our veterans over the years has been amazing. It's been a privilege for me to help promote this special event every year. Our active-duty military and veterans have done, and continue to do, so much to keep us safe and protect our freedoms. This is a nice way for us to say thank you to our nation's heroes. The bottom line is there are no words we can say or actions we can take that will do justice to the incredible debt we owe to all of our veterans. Thank you again to WGI and thank you to all of our military and veterans,” said Palmesano.

Rep. Nick Langworthy: The Military Construction Veterans Affairs And Related Agencies Appropriation Act

From Congressman Nick Langworthy: "Last week, the House began the process of passing appropriations for Fiscal Year 2025, starting with the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 8580). Passing this bill was a major priority for me as it takes care of our military heroes both during and after their service, from ensuring safe housing for military families to ensuring our veterans have access to the care they deserve.  Most importantly, this bill will fully fund veterans’ benefits and healthcare programs. Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our nation, and it is our duty to ensure they receive the highest level of care and support. This bill reflects our unwavering commitment to honor their service by providing robust funding for veterans' healthcare programs. It ensures that our heroes have access to top-notch medical treatment, mental health services, and rehabilitation programs tailored to their unique needs. By investing in these critical areas, we are working to improve the overall quality of life for our veterans, ensuring their needs are met. This legislation is a testament to our dedication to fulfilling our promises to those who have bravely served our nation.

This legislation also fulfills our promises to active-duty servicemembers by ensuring their families are supported so they can focus on protecting and serving our nation. Too often, we hear reports of military housing failing to meet safety and quality standards — this legislation will provide for the maintenance and updating of current housing, as well as develop plans for new barracks and other housing. Additionally, it funds military construction projects to maintain military bases at home and abroad, bolstering our national security.

Additionally, this legislation would block President Biden’s woke Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) policies, which focus on identity politics and distract from our military’s core mission of national defense.
