Longtime U.S. Senator In California Has Died

New York Democrat, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, put out a statement about the death of California U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein.  Gillibrand says quote: “Diane Feinstein was a force to be reckoned with.  She was one of the most powerful voices in the Senate, and she blazed a trail for generations of women who followed her into elected office.  I was so grateful to have her as my role model, my mentor and a dear friend.”

Troopers Report A Zany Chase In The City of Rochester 

State Police are reporting a wild chase in the City of Rochester.  Troopers say that a suspect who state police were attempting to pull over, put his vehicle in reverse and drove away quickly, striking a school bus and another vehicle.  Troopers also say, the suspect then intentionally rammed into two police vehicles.  The driver was stopped after tire deflating devices were put down on the street.  The suspect is a 33 year old Rochester man who is facing numerous charges.

Bath Electric Gas and Water officials say, there’s going to be water disruptions and a strong possibility of discolored water. Bath Electric Gas and Water says, this will be happening tomorrow between 10am and 2pm.  There will also be disruptions in water service in Bath, next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Officials with Bath Electric Water and Gas, apologize in advance, for any inconvenience.  

Full Statement: Valued BEGWS Water Customers  on and off Allen Street, Vermont Streeet, and Maine Street: Friday, September 29, 2023, we will be exercising main line water valves between 10:00am and 2:00pm. This may cause intermittent disruptions in water service.  This activity will also cause a high potential for discolored water.  

Monday, October 2, 2023, we will be tying in the new water main installed on Haverling Street to the existing water main on Allen Street. Water will be shut off and BEGWS water customers on Allen Street will be without water from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Tuesday, October 3, 2023, we will be tying in the new water main to the existing water main on Vermont Street. Water will be shut off and BEGWS water customers on Vermont Street will be without water from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Wednesday October 4, 2023, we will be tying in the new water main to the existing water main on Vermont Street. Water will be shut off and BEGWS water customers on Maine Street will be without water from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

When water is restored to impacted customers, there will be a high potential for discolored water.  

Please avoid running hot water and washing whites until you have run cold water for sufficient time to ensure your water is clear.

Gillibrand:  The VA Hospital Will Keep Going During The Government Shutdown, If One Happens This Weekend

In a Zoom press conference call with reporters this morning, U.S. Senator Kirsten  Gillibrand (D) says, if there is a government shutdown, the Bath VA will keep running.  "Well the VA stays open," Gillibrand explained.  "According to Secretary McDonaugh, there would be no impact  on veteran health care.  Burials would continue at the VA National Cemetaries, VA would continue to process and continue to deliver benefits to veterans: including compensation, pension, education, housing benefits, and the VA Board will continue to process appeals.  So we think the VA will be unharmed, but, if veterans are federal workers, they're not getting paid (during the shutdown)."   Gillibrand says also the shutdown will last until a deal is worked out with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Corning Republican Assemblyman Phil Palmesano says, the governor’s gun law, is making it so gun owners are getting denied the ability to buy ammunition.  "What we're seeing is delay upon delay," Palmesano said this morning.  "People are getting denied (purchases) left and right.  People who have spotless records,  who buy firearms and ammunition, for decades, are being denied the ability to buy these things." 

Governor Kathy Hochul says her law on this, Concealed Carry Improvement Act, was passed to protect New Yorkers.

House Fire On Tuesday Morning In Early Morning Hours

There was a house fire in the town of Pulteney Tuesday morning in the 3am hour.  Steuben County Public Safety Director Tim Marshall says that there were no injuries, but the house was very much on fire at the time that the Pulteney Fire Department arrived.  The cause of the fire was a malfunctioning furnace.  The Pulteney Fire Dept. was assisted by fire departments from Hammondsport, Prattsburgh and Bath with Branchport  and Kanona on standby.   

D.E.C. To Hold An Informational Meeting In Bath

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced that they are seeking volunteers to participate in the Winter Raptor Surveys for the 2023-2024 season.  DEC wildlife personnel are holding an information session on October 5 at 7 p.m. at Ted Markham Nature Center, 6732 Mossy Bank Park Road, Bath.  DEC's goal is to identify habitat used by threatened northern harriers and endangered short-eared owls during their nonbreeding, wintering period. Stationary surveys are conducted from mid-November to late April and begin one hour before sunset.

Bath Gas Electric & Water: Doing Flow Testing Today

NYS Attorney General Is Joining Lawsuit Against Amazon

State Attorney General Leticia James is joining 17 other states in suing Amazon.  This lawsuit alleges that Amazon’s actions allow it to stop rivals and sellers from lowering prices, degrade quality for shoppers, overcharge sellers, stifle innovation, and prevent rivals from fairly competing against Amazon.   

Sheriff Jim Allard And The Steuben Co Indemnification 

By a vote of 10 to 7 on Monday, the Steuben County legislature voted to pull  the indemnification for Sheriff Jim Allard.  That’s the legal protection from the county, to help the sheriff legally if he’s sued for on the job things.  The vote to have the sheriff pay for his own liability insurance, that passed 16-1.  The no vote came from Corning Democrat Hilda Lando.  Also, the vote to allow 12 and 13 year olds to hunt for deer whenv the youths are accompanied by an adult, that passed unanimously.

Steuben County: Update On Childcare Funding

Childcare is now available for more families in Steuben County, thanks to the New York State Office of Children & Family Services Child Care Block Grant amounting to $9.9 million from Apr. 1, 2023 through Sept. 30, 2024.  Approved by the county Legislature Monday, the 18-month grant allows for an additional $2.5 million in funds to be paid through the current year. The remainder will be used to cover anticipated costs in 2024.  Steuben County and other counties had been forced to create a childcare waitlist in June when state funding declined.  

The grant funds essential childcare services paid for through the county Department of Social Services.  The revised allocation accommodates current eligible families and the Oct. 1 increase in income eligibility up to 85 percent of the state median income -- now $99,250 for a family of four. All eligible families are guaranteed 12 months of eligibility.  County Manager Jack Wheeler noted the county DSS and its partner agency, ProAction of Steuben and Yates,  Inc., have worked aggressively to secure the funding, which was cut from the state budget.  “There was a lot of advocacy for the service,” he said. “(DSS Commissioner) Kathy Muller and (Deputy
Commissioner) Lise Reynolds are to be commended for their very hard work.”

Paving Today In The Village Of Bath

Bath Village Mayor Michael Sweet says, Campbell Street in Bath is being paved today.  Accordign to Sweet, crews were going to do this yesterday, but the work was moved until today. 

Rep. Nick Langworthy: Two Federal Grants For The Area

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy says, there’s a federal grant for $60,000 going towards the West Water Street Site Predevelopment Work project in Painted Post.  Langworthy also says, there’s a federal grant for $40,000 to provide training to leaders in Steuben, Chemung and Skyler Counties, to help out with the Seneca-Keuka Watershed Nine Element Plan. 

The County IDA Puts Out Two Factory Videos

The Steuben County IDA issued a statement today saying that they are releasing two more manufacturing career videos in partnership with Mercury Integrated Manufacturing. These next videos highlight jobs in metal forming and inventory control at the company’s Hammondsport plant.  IDA Head Jamie Johnson says these videos are geared towards middle and high school students to promote manufacturing jobs at Mercury and the opportunities they can provide high school graduates to grow with the company.

21 Year Old Pulteney Man Dies In Yates Co Accident

From The Yates Co Sheriffs' Dept:   

On September 23rd around 2:10am Yates County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Benton Fire Department, Penn Yan Ambulance and the Office of Emergency Management responded to Gorham Rd in the Town of Benton for a one car MVA. Investigation revealed that Tyler Williams was traveling east bound on Gorham Road when he lost control of his vehicle and went off of the south shoulder. Williams then over corrected, resulting in his vehicle traveling back across the roadway to the North shoulder were the vehicle began to overturn into the field. Williams was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigation is ongoing at this time.

New Office Manager For Hammondsport Chamber

The Board of Directors of the Greater Hammondsport Chamber of  Commerce has announced they have a new Office Manager: Corrine Hetherington.  She is a Hammondsport native who comes to the Chamber a background in retail sales, customer service, inventory control, management in both the retail and food service industries, and event coordination.  Hetherington has an Associates degree in Business Administration, and they say she is excited to bring her skills to a the Hammondsport Chamber.

The Bath Village Police Department is putting one of their old police cars up for bid online.  It’s a 2019 Dodge Charger.  This Dodge Charger is up for bid until tomorrow evening at  6pm. 

Two Vehicle Accident This Morning In Bath

There was a two vehicle accident on 415 in Bath this morning in the 9am hour.  It was a cattle truck and at least one car.  There was at least one person with a non life threatening injury and emergency medical responders were at the scene.   

Another School Bus Accident Is In The News Today

There was a school bus accident this morning at 730am in the Town of Genesee, Pennsylvania.  Scanner audio indicates that the bus driver said, there were 35 students on board the bus, there was at least one injury: a female student with a cut on her arm.  At one point, the bus was on it’s side with fuel leaking.  However, all students were able to evacuate the bus successfully. 

The County To Vote On Hybrid Vehicles Training 

Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler says, the county legislature will on Monday, vote on putting funds towards paying for law enforcement and fire fighters to take courses on how to operate both hybrid and electric cars.  County Manager Wheeler also says, the county has a driver diversion program where people with a first time speeding ticket can take a safety class to avoid having to pay a fine in court.  Wheeler says there is a fee for the class, but he also says, the county does have funds available for this.

Lots Going On In Steuben County On Saturday

Saturday is Farm Trail Day in Steuben County.  Cornell Cooperative Extension says, people will be touring farms in Bath, Campbell, Savona, Avoca, Prattsburgh, Corning, Hornell and Lindley.  Also on Saturday, the annual Strong Kids/Safe Kids event, will be taking place from Noon to 3:00, at the Steuben County Fairgrounds in Bath.  The Strong Kids/Safe Kids event, will have popular carnival games, inflatable bouncers and art activities for kids up to sixth grade. 

Bath State Police BCI Charge A Yates County Man

FROM STATE POLICE:  On September 19, 2023, the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from Bath arrested Shane E. Gage, age 39, of Dundee, NY, for three counts of Sex Abuse 1st - physically helpless (D Felony), and one count of Sex Abuse 1st - victim under the age of thirteen years old with the actor being twenty-one years old or older (D Felony). His arrest follows an investigation which resulted in a Yates County Grand Jury indictment.  The incident involved a complaint to the State Police from the Yates County Child Protective Services regarding Gage’s interactions with a minor child in residences located within Steuben and Yates Counties. Gage was processed at SP Dundee and was transported to Yates County Jail for Centralized Arraignment Part Court. 

Schumer, Hochul, And The Semi Conductor Industry

The Daily Gazette reports that New York State has been awarded some of the first federal funding from the CHIPS & Science Act.  Democrat US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul say, this will boost the semiconductor industry, in New York State, by setting up Tech Hub sites around the state.   Also, Senator Schumer says that this will allow small, medium and large manufacturing employers "to use the network of sites to launch new semiconductor companies."

Governor Hochul Facing  Numerous Lawsuits

The governor is facing more than one lawsuit from a public official.  The Jamestown Post Journal reports that Republican State Senator George Borrello is suing the state in federal court.  He’s suing Governor Kathy Hochul over her Concealed Carry Improvement Act which requires more background checks and a tax when buying ammunition.  Also, Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy and Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney are suing Governor Kathy Hochul to block changes the governor is making to election laws.  Hochul wants to allow more absentee voting and early mail in voting.

Governor Kathy Hochul: The No Surprise Bill

The governor signed a law yesterday, The No Surprise Bill, that’ll make energy companies be more straightforward about price increases.  "It protects New Yorkers from surprise utility increases on your energy bills," Hochul said.  "Here in New York, you have the power to choose which utility company provides your electricity.  I think these companies should have to let you know, when your energy bills are going up."  

Shooting In The Overnight Hours In Elmira 

Elmira Police say there was a shooting at 1am this morning and that 20 shots were fired.  A 17 year old male was hit twice in the stomach with bullets.  He’s said to have non-life threatening injuries.  Police are looking for a suspect. 

Gillibrand: There Very Well Could Be A Gov't Shutdown

Democrat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she thinks there very likely could be a government shutdown.  "I know Senator Schumer is working very hard, trying to work with the speaker on a plan," Senator Gillibrand said.  "Schumer is obviously working with Senator Mitch McConnell.  So I'm just hoping that Senator Schumer will prevail with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy."

PACT Act Update For Local Veterans 

The PACT Act.  PACT stands for promise to address comprehensive toxins.  Democrat US Senator Gillibrand says - if you're a veteran who was deployed to a combat zone and left the military between September 11, 2001 and October 1, 2013, you can apply for dept of veterans health care benefits until September 30.  Gillibrand says thanks to the PACT Act, veterans have expanded access to health care and benefits.

New Poll Out This Morning From Siena Institute

There is a new Siena College poll out which says 34 percent of new York state residents don’t want either President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump to run in 2024.  That same poll also shows that Biden does better than Trump in New York State.  Governor Kathy Hochul is at 40 percent.  Senator Schumer’s popularity was at 47 percent, Senator Gillibrand is at 41 percent.

Less Overdoses In August Here In Steuben County 

The Steuben County Public Health Department and partners are sharing updated overdose data for August: 23 overdoses were reported. One overdose was fatal, and 5 instances of Narcan administration were cited.  “We are pleased to see the number of overdoses and fatalities decreased significantly this past month,” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “Steuben County Public Health and our partners have been focusing much energy in providing Narcan training and making Narcan kits accessible in a variety of places throughout the county.”  In August, four of Steuben’s overdose records cited opioids as a suspected drug causing the overdose.  Four overdose records did not note a specific substance or were not able to be accessed for a full review, and the remaining 15 records indicated another substance was suspected to be the cause of an overdose.  Other reported substances included cocaine, alcohol, prescription drugs, methamphetamines, and others.  Narcan training is available at https://www.steubencountyny.gov/narcan or in-person training can be scheduled by calling Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438 or reaching out to the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee.  Local support is available.  Steuben County Substance Abuse Services (SCASAS) offers outpatient services in Bath (607-664-2156), Corning (607-937-6201), and Hornell (607-324-2483) as well as after-hours services (607-937-7800).  CASA Trinity in Hornell (607-282-5200) and Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath offer detox and inpatient services as well.  Residents are also encouraged to call 211 for other local support. 

Schumer: A Complete Role Reversal For Republicans

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is denouncing Republicans in congress for not being more supportive of the pentatgon.  Schumer describes this situation as a new one and  complete role reversal from what the GOP used to be like.  "The Republicans cannot even agree to debate a bill to fund the Defense Department and the intelligence community," Schumer said on the floor of the senate recently.  "They bulk on providing emergency aid to fighting off a Russian invasion.  In the senate,  our Republican colleagues are more supportive of our Ukrainian friends, to their credit.  However, extremists in the GOP ranks are blocking the promotion of military leaders.  What do the Republican leaders do?  Nothing," Schumer stated.  

Langworthy: The Impeachment Inquiry Is Justified 

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy says, the impeachment inquiry into President Biden is the logical next step as a result of the evidence brought forth by the investigations conducted by the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees over the past eight months.  Langworthy says he’s seen bank records showing the Biden family has gotten millions of dollars from foreign entities.  "We have records of then-Vice President Biden flying his son, Hunter, around the world for foreign business meetings on Air Force Two," Biden said.  "The House continues to uncover evidence of wrongdoing and is met with obstruction from Biden’s family lawyers and administration bureaucrats every step of the way."

"It gives me great pleasure to announce that Tub Town Brewing has purchased the former Five Star Bank property located at 220 Liberty Street and will expand to this location. What is significant about this is that Arbor Housing was in the process of buying the building until I intervened and asked them to reconsider. This property is important to the tax roll of the Village, and it didn’t align with our comprehensive plan (which is to reduce the number of not for profits in our business district). Arbor said that they would consider the request if we could find them alternative office space that met their needs. I’m happy to announce that Tub Town (their partners) and Arbor have been able to work out all requests and as a result we have, created a win win win. A win for Tub Town as they will expand to the most marketable façade on Liberty Street, a win for Arbor Housing as they will have upgraded office space in the former Babcock building and most importantly a huge win for the taxpayers and all businesses downtown.

Steuben County Youth Bureau Director Bill Caudill says, this year’s Tyrtle Beach Fundraiser brought in $26,411.  Bill Caudill  announced that this morning on Community Focus with Dave Taylor Smith.  Tyrtle Beach is a fundraiser for non-profit youth organizations throughout Central Steuben County.

NYSUT: Lots Of Teachers Are Working W/Out Contracts

State Teachers Union NYSUT, issued a statement today, saying that there are 130 teacher unions around the state, that are still working without contracts.  The state teachers union spokesman says, with the teacher shortage that’s been going on, and the decline in college students becoming teachers, this is a problematic situation. 

Background Checks Are Now In Troopers Hands  

The state police have taken over the job of doing background checks for those buying guns or ammunition.  Troopers took over that duty earlier this week. 

Steuben County Grand Jury Indicts Risingville Man For Alleged Corning Crimes From Ten Years Ago  

From New York State Police in Painted Post:  On September 13, 2023, the New York State Police at Painted Post reports the arrest of Kristopher Vosburgh, age 43, of Risingville, NY. His arrest follows a yearlong investigation, which resulted in a Steuben County Grand Jury indictment.  The incident involved a complaint to the State Police regarding Vosburghs’s interactions with a minor child at a town of Corning residence in 2013. Vosburgh was charged with Sex Abuse 1st (D Felony), forty-nine counts of Sex Abuse 2nd (A Misdemeanor), and Endangering the Welfare of a Child (A Misdemeanor). Vosburgh was remanded to the Steuben County Jail for Centralized Arraignment Part Court.

Solar Power News, Out Of Campbell

Campbell Town Clerk Michelle Seeley tells WVIN that the Town of Campbell lifted the moratorium on Solar last Monday.  The Campbell Clerk also says, there is still a moratorium on Solar Battery Storage there, and that the amount of time that the moratorium will last, will be made known in the next few weeks.

Tourism Is Alive And Well In Steuben County

Governor Kathy Hochul says that tourist numbers have greatly increaseed, here in New York State.  The governor notes that in 2022, there was a four percent increase in tourist spending, and Hochul says 291 million people visited the state last year.   Wvin checked in with Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler on that topic.  Wheeler says county tourism is doing “very well and that tourism is strong."

Corning Man Charged After Alleged Domestic Dispute

From The Sheriff:  Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 12, 2023, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jacob G. Vanness, age 28, of River Road, Corning, New York, following an investigation of a reported domestic incident in progress in the Town of Corning.  It is alleged that Vanness threatened a member of his family or household with injury and had a previous conviction of similar conduct.  Mr. Vanness was charged with Menacing in the Third Degree and Aggravated Family Offense, a class E Felony.  Mr. Vanness was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and remanded to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.

Jasper Man Charged After Alleged Bath Domestic Incident

From The Sheriff:  Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 10, 2023, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Justin R. Lapham, age 24, of SR 417, Jasper, New York, following an investigation of a reported domestic incident in Bath.  It is alleged that Mr. Lapham damaged property and endangered a child under the age of 17.  Mr. Lapham was charged with Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  Mr. Lapham was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

FCC/FEMA Cell Phone Text Test, On October 4

Steuben County Emergency Services Director and Public Safety Director Tim Marshall says, FEMA and the Federal  Communications Commission will be doing a nationwide text test, on October 4^th.  Marshall says, all Radio and TV stations will air Emergency Alert System Tests/Announcements, and all cell phones will be getting a text message.  This will all happen at 2:20pm on October 4.

Feds: Bath Man Pleaded Guilty Yesteday

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced that Benjamin Crout, 39, of Bath, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa to possession of child pornography by an individual with a prior sex offense, which carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years.

McGuire, who is handling the case, stated that in August 2004, Crout was convicted in Steuben County Court of Possessing Sexual Performance by a Child Less than 16 and Attempted Sexual Abuse in the 1st Degree. In June 2022, law enforcement received a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, that an individual uploaded six files containing child pornography to a Google Drive account. Investigators tracked the IP address to Crout’s residence. On January 26, 2023, a search warrant was executed at Crout’s residence during which a tablet and cell phone containing images of child pornography were seized. The devices collectively contained 1,323 images and 47 videos of child pornography, some of which included infants/toddlers engaged in sexually explicit conduct and depictions of violence.

The plea is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia and the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Eugene Staniszewski.  

Sentencing is scheduled for January 4, 2024, before Judge Siragusa.

Report Of A Bad FIght On Pine Street In Bath

From Bath Police Chief Colin Taft:  On 09/08/2023 at about 6:50 PM, Officers responded to the area of Pine Street for the report of multiple people fighting. Upon arrival, Officers were able to locate two of the individuals involved while the third had left the scene prior to arrival. The two individuals on scene were identified as Dawn M. Jones and her juvenile son. The third individual was identified as Michael N. Lennon, who was found at his address on W William Street.  It was found that Dawn M. Jones and Michael N. Lennon were involved in a physical altercation. During this time Dawn M. Jones involved her juvenile son into the physical altercation with Michael N. Lennon.  Dawn M. Jones, age 47, and Michael N. Lennon, age 39, were both arrested and charged with one count each of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class A misdemeanor. Both were released on appearance tickets and are due in the Village of Bath Court on a later date.  At about 11:09 PM Officers responded back to the area of Pine Street for the report of Michael N. Lennon throwing rocks through Dawn M. Jones windows. During this time it was also reported that Michael N. Lennon threw a rock at a female juvenile, striking her in the back of the head and causing injury.  Michael N. Lennon was located on scene by Officers and placed into custody. Michael N. Lennon was charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class A misdemeanor, one count of Assault in the second degree, a class D felony, and one count of Criminal Mischief in the third degree, a class E felony.  Michael N.  Lennon was processed then transported to Steuben County Jail for CAP court. He was held.

SWAT Team And Other Members Of The Steuben County Sheriff's Department, Honored At Public Safety Meeting

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard recognized/honored Steuben County Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Day and Deputy Kidder, and the SWAT Team, for saving a suicidal woman, during a domestic dispute, on August 15, in the Town of Lindley.  Allard also commended the Investigator Martin and Sgt. Shutt and Deputy Saltsman, for their work in doing medical assists and other work on August 19 on 390 in Wayland.  The sheriff also announced a commendation for the SWAT Team, for their work in assisting the NYSP on August 22 and 23, at the standoff on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath.   Sheriff Allard noted, during the commendations, that those involved in saving lives, "do so while risking their own lives, and help provide assistance during horrible tragedies with professionalism and integrity." 

Bath Man Charged For Alleged Protection Order Violation

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 9, 2023, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Gordon T. Taft, age 41, of Belfast Street, Bath, New York, following an investigation of a reported violation of an order of protection in Savona.  It is alleged that Mr. Taft violated a duly served order of protection and had a similar previous conviction in the past five years.  Mr. Taft was charged with Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, and Aggravated Family Offense, both a class E Felony.  Mr. Taft was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

New Emergency Medical Services Coordinator For Steuben

Steuben County Public Services Director Tim Marshall says that Brandon Rosetti, will be taking over the position of EMS Coordinator for Steuben County.   According to Marshall, Rosetti comes to work for Steuben County, from Arnot Ogden Medical, where Rosetti trains paramedics.

Early Voting Starts In Late October In Steuben County

There is an election coming up in November.  In Bath, early voting will be at the Steuben County Annex Building, 20 East Morris Street in Bath.  In Corning, it’ll be at the South East Steuben County Library at the Civic Center Plaza.  Early voting begins on October 28^th and goes until Sunday November 5^th.   The General Election is on November 7^th.

Farm Accident In Yates County Claims A Life

The Yates County Sheriff’s Department reports that there was a fatal farm accident in Dundee on Saturday.  Officials with the Yates County Sheriff’s Office say Travis Hoover was on a tractor that flipped over down an embankment.  Travis Hoover was pronounced dead at the scene.  

The Annual Steuben County Senior Forum Is Coming Up 

Steuben County officials say that they’re having speakers and state officials at the annual Senior Forum on September 21^st and event which is going to be hosted by the Steuben County Office For the Aging.  It'll start at 830am on September 21, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bath.   The County Office of the Aging, is also putting on a six hour A.A.R.P. smart driver program for drivers of all ages.  That’ll be 9am to 4pm on September 16^th at the Hornell Senior Center, on the Broadway Mall in Hornell. 

Road Closing In The Town Of Lindley Next Week

Steuben County Route 5 in the Town of Lindley will be closed from 8 am to 3 pm, from Monday through Thursday of next week.  The stretch of road is located between Gibson and Stowell roads.  There will be no on-site detour.

The Indictment Charges Against Schoonover 

Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker reports that Larry Schoonover, 51, of Bath, has been indicted on the following charges, for the standoff in Bath on August 20: 1^st degree attempted murder, 2^nd degree attempted murder, 1^st degree criminal use of a firearm, 3^rd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 1^st degree reckless endangerment, 3^rd degree assault.  "It is alleged that Larry Schoonover knew people were police officers, that he knew that they were doing their duty, and that Schoonover tried to kill them," District Attorney Brooks Baker stated.  "The fact that there were not injuries to police officers, was not for a lack of Schoonover trying." 

Painted Post Man Charged

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 6, 2023, Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joseph R. Hetlan, age 42, of Hornby Drive, Painted Post, New York, resultant from an investigation and search warrant conducted in March 2023 concerning narcotic sales in the Painted Post area which led to a Grand Jury Indictment.  It is alleged that Mr. Hetlan possessed multiple preparations of methamphetamine and a prohibited weapon at his residence.   Mr. Hetlan was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a class B Felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree.   Mr. Hetlan was arraigned in Steuben County Court and remanded to the Steuben County Jail.  Sheriff Allard thanks the City of Corning Police and the Village of Painted Post Police Departments for their assistance in this investigation.

A Public Narcan Unit Is Outdoors, At The Addison Fire Dept

 A public waterproof outdoor NARCAN unit is now located at the front of the Addison Volunteer Fire Station – the first in Steuben County – with others scheduled to be
installed at the Hammondsport and Caton volunteer fire departments soon.  The life-saving measure in Addison is in place at the station on Tuscarora Street thanks to the
efforts of Jaime Dyke of Addiction Awareness of Steuben County and the local fire department, with all three outdoor units funded by the Steuben Prevention Coalition Opioid
Committee (SPCOC).  “The overdose rates in Steuben County continue to rise,” said Connie Terry, SPCOC Program
Assistant. “The wall units provide easy access to Narcan® and are intended to make it available 24/7 at the time of a life-threatening emergency.”  Terry noted each unit requires community partners willing to monitor the units and contact
members of the Opioid Committee for refills. The importance of having the outdoor wall units available in a rural county the size of Rhode Island cannot be overstated, she said.
“It is imperative that we find a way to reduce the time and distance to EMT/emergency services,” she said. “Fire departments and police stations have always been
places people turn to for help in an emergency. Overdoses can happen any day of the week at any time of the day. Having the emergency wall units and making Narcan readily available is essential to saving lives.”  
Narcan® is considered a “Do No Harm” drug that only works when opioids are present in a person’s system. For example, if someone overdoses on methamphetamine, Narcan will not reverse the overdose and will not further harm the

Suspects From Yesterday's Press Conference Announcement, Are Being Tied To The April Incident When A Truck Rammed Into A Kwik Fill In The Hammonsdport Area.  District Attorney Brooks Baker says that the four suspects who are accused of numerous house break-in’s and vehicle break-in’s, are believed to be responsible for the incident in which a truck crashing into a local Quick Fill on April 12^th.

Brooks Baker: The Bodycam Video Is Chilling To Watch

State Police, Bath Village Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department were all at the shooting incident on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath on August 20^th.  Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker has watched the body cam videos from the incident.  Baker calls the bodycam videos, "Chilling.  Every single one of the videos I've watched scares me to death," Baker said.  "You can hear projectiles going by in the air, by police officer's head.  You can hear the bullets striking behind the officer's heads.  The video includes video footage of Mr. Shoonover pointing a gun and shooting at police officers at very close range."  The suspect in the case, Larry Schoonover, 51, of Bath, was indicted yesterday. 

Hornell Woman Is Facing Charges Now In Bath

From The Sheriff's Dept: Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that Investigators charged 47 year old Nicole Harwood, of High Street, Hornell, for allegedly receiving money she was not entitled to in excess of $3,000.  Harwood is also allged to have made false entries into an official business record in the Town of Bath.  Harwood was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny and 1st degree Falsifying Business Records. Harwood was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released. 

Troopers: A Double Stabbing Incident In Avoca 

From NYSP Bath:  On September 3, 2023, at approximately 10:40 p.m., the New York State Police in Bath responded to 8077 Bauter Road in the town of Avoca for a report of a stabbing.  Upon arrival, law enforcement located two injured males, 55-year-old Richard M. Randall and 49-year-old Adam W. Rounds. Investigation revealed a physical altercation took place at the residence between the two males, who are roommates. During the altercation, both Randall and Rounds sustained knife wound injuries.  Rounds was transported by ambulance to Noyes Memorial Hospital and later to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.  Randall was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.  Randall was arrested for Assault 2nd (D Felony). Randall was transported to the Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment and remanded to the Steuben County Jail with no bail.  The New York State Police were assisted at the scene by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Bath Ambulance, Bath AMR, and Avoca Fire Department.

This remains an ongoing investigation.  

Suspect Who Was Wanted In  Texas, Caught In Avoca

From The Sheriff's Dept:  Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 6, 2023, Deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Raymund D. Gardner, age 25, of Alloway Drive, Fort Worth, Texas, following a report of two males fighting in the driving lane of I-390 in the Town of Avoca.  It is alleged that Mr. Gardner was one of the combatants and was wanted by the State of Texas due to an active probation violation warrant.   Mr. Gardner was charged as a Fugitive from Justice.  Mr. Gardner was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and remanded to the Steuben County Jail to await extradition. 

The Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker held a press conference at 200pm this afternoon.  What we’ve learned is, that four suspects are being indicted on 162 counts for alleged home and vehicle break in’s, in Steuben County, Yates County, Seneca County, Allegany County, and also in Pennsylvania.  At today’s press conference the D.A. showed a map.  From looking at the map, it appears that two of the break-in’s were in Hornell.  Other break ins were in Avoca, Prattsburgh, Putleney, Cohocton, Naples and Seneca Falls.  There are four suspects, Jon Janelli of Pulteney, Adam Hosmer of Avoca, Devin Twist of Bath and Maurice Lake of Rochester, were indicted on charges of Enterprise Corruption.  The four suspects are currently being held.     

O'Mara: The State's Green Energy Plans Need Work

Republican State Senator Tom O’Mara says the state’s green energy plans are not well planned and will require additional taxpayer funding.  O’Mara also says, the governor and the state’s climate action council want the state to be running on 70 percent green energy by the year 2030.  Supporters of the this say that Significant growth in jobs within green industries, with union labor as the backbone of the State’s clean energy economy, which will help create family-sustaining jobs and wage gains across the economy and in every corner of the State.  

Schumer: If There Is A Shutdown, It's McCarthy's Fault

The Washington Post reports that Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer this morning said that if there is a government shutdown, the blame is on GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy.  Schumer said the first step to avoid this, is for McCarthy and the House Republican Leadership to make up their minds that they’re going to pass a bipartisan bill.  Schumer says once they do that, we can work out the details.  Republicans maintain that Democrats make government shutdowns sound worse than the shutdowns ever are.

Livingston Co Resident Accused Of Welfare Fraud Here

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports:  That on August 31, 2023, Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s office arrested Jamie S. Swanke, age 42, of Wadsworth Street, Geneseo, New York.  It is alleged that from 10/04/2020 to 06/30/2021 Ms. Swanke offered two false instruments for filing to the Steuben County Department of Social Services and received benefits from the Steuben County Department of Social Services in the amount of $7995.00 that she was not eligible to receive.  Ms. Swanke is charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, a class E Felony and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class D Felony.  Ms. Swanke was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.  The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.

State Comptroller Audits Avoca Central To See If Employees Watch Harassment Video For State Required Training 

Audit Objective

Determine whether Avoca Central School District (District) employees and Board of Education (Board) members completed annual sexual harassment prevention training (SHP Training).

Key Findings

SHP Training was not provided to all employees and any Board members. Of the 20 total individuals we tested (15 selected employees and all five Board members), four employees or 27 percent of employees tested and the five Board members did not complete the annual SHP Training.

Key Recommendations

Ensure all employees complete annual SHP Training and encourage Board members to complete the training.

District officials generally agreed with our recommendations and have indicated they planned to initiate corrective action.

Gillibrand Visits All Of The Counties In The State This Year
